This is a unique account of the Anglo-Boer War by a young woman who found herself alone on her parents' Free State farm during the war. She attempted to evade the advancing British forces, was captured and sent to a concentration camp, escaped, spent time on commando with her brothers as there was nowhere else for her to go, and was eventually recaptured. She survived near-death in her second concentration camp, but ultimately rejoined her parents in yet another camp just before the end of the war, after which they returned to a farm devastated by the enemy's scorched earth policy. The title of the book is taken from the remark of a British officer ('So you're the lady who fought?') ordered to interrogate her, but who instead expressed admiration for her defiance in adversity.
